Good Sites/Bad Sites: Evaluating Web Resources
All web sites are not created equal. If you're going to use websites as resources, you'll need to evaluate the site to make sure it's a good one.
How do I know it's a good site?
1. The author's name is clearly stated and information about the author is readily available (remember, and author can be a single person or a group)
2. The purpose or mission of the author is clearly stated
3. The page shows signs of being recently maintained, either by a "last updated on" date, or by the current information displayed on the page.
4. It's a professionally designed site and is well maintained (all the links work, etc)
5. The domain name indicates it is not a commercial site
* .com - commercial
* .gov - government
* .org - organization
* .mil - military
* .edu - educational institution
How do I know when to question a site?
1. The page contains obviously inaccurate information or multiple typos
2. The page is hosted by a free web service
3. Information on the author is difficult to find or not available
4. The author is not an expert on the subject (wikipedia!)
5. The information on the site is obviously biased or inflammatory
Where Can I go for sites that have already been evaluated?
The Internet Public Library
Let's Evaluate Some Web Sites!
Sample Site: http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/hastings.htm
What to Do:
- Create annotations for these two sites using the evaluation points discussed above.
- Put these sites into proper MLA format
- Post your annotations on this wiki. To post, click the "Edit Page" button on your groups page. The password is goodsites. Type or paste in your annotations and click "Save."
- Decide as as group which sites you would recommend based on these new evaluations. We'll create a "recommended sites" list for other students & your class will receive credit.
- If you have time, go back to some of your own resources for this project. Which ones would you use again? Which ones would you not use based on the above criteria?
